The Taliban-run embassy in Cairo said five Afghan citizens have been released from prisons in Libya and transferred to Afghanistan. In a statement issued on Saturday, the embassy said coordination efforts are continuing for the release of other Afghan detainees in Libya.<\/p>\n
However, the Taliban-run embassy provided no details about the charges against these individuals, the length of their detention or how they were released. No clear figures have also been published by the Taliban administration on the number of Afghan citizens held in Libyan prisons.<\/p>\n
According to available reports, Libya is considered one of the dangerous routes for migration to Europe, and a number of migrants from Asian and African countries, including Afghanistan, are detained along this route. Reports show that dozens to hundreds of Afghan citizens have also been detained in Libya while trying to cross through this route.<\/p>\n
International organizations have repeatedly described the conditions in migrant detention centres and prisons in Libya as inhumane and have called for an end to mass detentions of migrants. The Taliban-run embassy in Cairo also said that after the legal procedures are completed, other Afghan prisoners will be transferred to the country.<\/p>\n
Libya is located in North Africa and, because of its proximity to the Mediterranean coast, has for years been one of the main routes used by migrants heading to Europe.
