The fifth round of talks between a Pakistani government delegation and Jamaat-e-Islami ended last night without any concrete outcome, and the party said it would not suspend its protests and its Islamabad march until the fuel tax was fully abolished.<\/p>\n
According to the Express Tribune, government officials at the meeting, citing security concerns and the possibility of tension in the capital, called for the march to be postponed, but Jamaat-e-Islami rejected the request. Party leaders said the tax on petroleum products was placing direct pressure on low-income groups and that its continuation was unacceptable to the public.<\/p>\n
Jamaat-e-Islami has also warned that the Islamabad march will go ahead with the large participation of its supporters and that it will not retreat under government pressure. The party has stressed that it places people\u2019s demands above any external pressure.<\/p>\n
On the other side, government officials said during the talks that Pakistan was facing a difficult financial situation and that the International Monetary Fund was about to send a fresh delegation to the country. According to them, maintaining the fuel tax is part of the economic reform programme sought by the international lender.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has also announced another major march to the capital on Sept. 27. The party said the protest aims to counter political arrests, restrictions on party activity and to demand free and transparent elections.<\/p>\n
PTI leaders accused the federal government of an organised crackdown on the opposition and said thousands would be mobilised to take part in the march. Islamabad courts in recent days have also issued separate rulings restricting routes leading to the capital for marches and blocking the passports of several party leaders.<\/p>\n
