Marking the fifth year that girls’ secondary schools above sixth grade have remained closed, the George W. Bush Presidential Center has published the stories of four Afghan girls who, despite restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration, have continued their education secretly or online.<\/p>\n
The center said that since returning to power, the Taliban administration has imposed sweeping restrictions on the Afghan people, with the ban on girls’ education among the heaviest consequences. According to the center, a number of education supporters and institutions have tried to keep the path to learning open for girls through online classes, secret schools and alternative education programmes.<\/p>\n
In one of these accounts, Lina, an 18-year-old girl, said that after schools were closed, she tried not to let her learning stop by reading books and using educational resources. Another girl said that despite the educational restrictions, she continued reading, writing and learning English, and believes that knowledge cannot be taken away from a person.<\/p>\n
Hadia, another girl who has been unable to continue formal education, said she follows her lessons online and has also learned English, first aid and some other skills. A 20-year-old girl also said that despite her studies being halted and many of her future plans disappearing, she has not given up her dream of continuing her education and building a better life.<\/p>\n
The Bush Center also stressed its continuing commitment to supporting the people of Afghanistan and activists working on girls’ education. One of the girls in the report called on countries around the world not to forget Afghan girls and to create opportunities for their education and growth.<\/p>\n
On 27 September 2021, coinciding with the reopening of boys’ schools after coronavirus-related closures, the Taliban kept girls’ schools above sixth grade closed. According to UNICEF figures, more than 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have been denied access to secondary education over the past five years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
