According to assessments by Russian military experts, the scenario of armed groups infiltrating the northern borders of Central Asia from Afghan territory is among the region’s most serious security concerns.

The newspaper Izvestia, in an analytical report, said two core scenarios are being practised in the exercise: the emergence of illegal armed groups in one Central Asian country following internal crises, and the entry or advance of armed groups from Afghan territory toward the northern borders of the region.

Yury Lyamin, a Russian military expert, said forces from the Collective Security Treaty Organization should seriously train for the possibility of militants infiltrating from Afghanistan, based on experience from recent years on the southern borders of Central Asia. He added that despite what he described as “relative stability” in Afghanistan, the unpredictability of future developments forces regional countries to remain prepared for possible situations.

Yury Knotov, another Russian military expert, also said one of the main goals of the exercise is to transfer Russia’s operational experience to regional allies. According to him, the drill includes training on the simultaneous use of heavy equipment, reconnaissance drones and attack drones, a method that has taken on a prominent role in military operations in recent years.

The active phase of “Border 2026” is being held from September 5 to 9 at the Koktal military range in Kazakhstan. About 1,500 military personnel and more than 300 pieces of military equipment, including 115 drones, from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are taking part, and Russian forces from the country’s 201st military base in Tajikistan have also joined the exercise.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization is a Russia-led regional military alliance that includes several Central Asian countries. Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are among the countries that have closely monitored developments in Afghanistan in recent years from the standpoint of border security.

Russia-led Border 2026 drill in Kazakhstan focuses on Afghanistan-linked threats and possible militant infiltration into Central Asia.

[17,6

post-22006","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-international
["GET
