The United Nations has warned in a new report that 13.8 million people in Afghanistan are expected to face food insecurity, a situation that has added to the pressure on vulnerable families as the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen.<\/p>\n
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday, 24 September, that the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan remains on a downward trajectory. According to the report, the main factors intensifying the crisis include the large-scale return of migrants, funding shortages, trade disruptions and the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n
The UN said its humanitarian response plan for Afghanistan in 2026 requires $1.71 billion, but only 31.2% of that funding has been secured so far. The drop in financial resources comes as humanitarian needs across different parts of Afghanistan remain high, the report said.<\/p>\n
It added that heavy rainfall and flash floods have also left significant humanitarian consequences in the eastern, southeastern and central parts of Afghanistan. The agency also reported increasing restrictions on humanitarian operations amid regional instability and supply-chain disruptions.<\/p>\n
According to the UN, relief agencies have turned to alternative routes to transport essential supplies, including the Lapis Lazuli Corridor via Turkey and Europe. The rerouting shows that the delivery of aid has also become more difficult.<\/p>\n
In another part of the report, the UN described the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan as still dire. According to the report, women and girls face severe restrictions on education, employment, freedom of movement and participation in public life.<\/p>\n
The Lapis Lazuli Corridor is one of the region’s transit routes, connecting Afghanistan through Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Georgia to Turkey and then Europe.
