Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Moscow considers the US and Israeli attacks against Iran to be a “direct and unprovoked aggression,” stressing that Russia’s position toward Tehran has not changed.<\/p>\n
Speaking at her weekly briefing, Zakharova said the stance, in her view, was not a momentary assessment but was based on “the facts and evidence available.” She added that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have also expressed the same view.<\/p>\n
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman also described the naval blockade of Iran as legally and humanitarianly “unacceptable.” She said illegal sanctions and any action that disrupts the normal trade, communications and logistics activities of a sovereign country are “completely illegal.”<\/p>\n
According to Zakharova, the only legal mechanism for restricting the activities of countries is sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council. She added that the Security Council has neither sanctioned events related to the Strait of Hormuz nor authorised such action.<\/p>\n
In response to a question about the status of the Strait of Hormuz, she said Russia’s relations with Iran are being pursued on the basis of existing agreements as well as the long history of ties between the two countries. Zakharova added that these agreements were finalised and implemented after a lengthy process.<\/p>\n
Zakharova described the situation in the Strait of Hormuz as part of a broader challenge, saying the legal framework governing seas and oceans is under threat. She claimed that violations of international rules are pushing the area toward lawlessness and the disruption of accepted norms.<\/p>\n
She also criticised what she called the “destruction of maritime law” by a number of countries, saying that by ignoring the Law of the Sea Convention, these countries are seeking to impose rules of their own. According to her, this approach is dangerous and unacceptable.<\/p>\n
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the region’s key shipping routes and plays a prominent role in tensions linked to the Gulf.
