The United Nations’ independent international fact-finding mission on Iran has called for an immediate halt to hostilities and for all parties to the conflict to comply with international law, following deadly US airstrikes on civilian areas in southern Iran.<\/p>\n
The commission said an attack on a wedding ceremony and a residential house in Hormozgan province had once again highlighted the human cost of the conflict. According to the body, civilians must be protected in all circumstances and the parties to the conflict are obliged to take the necessary precautions to keep civilians and civilian objects safe.<\/p>\n
Sara Hossain, head of the fact-finding mission, said the strikes were a reminder of the human consequences of war. She stressed that protecting civilians must be a priority in all circumstances.<\/p>\n
According to the commission’s report, on September 1 a US airstrike hit a house in the city of Kuhestak in Hormozgan province, where a wedding ceremony was taking place, according to the body. Iranian media reported that five people, including two children and a woman, were killed in the attack and dozens more were wounded.<\/p>\n
In another incident, on July 30, an airstrike destroyed a residential house in the city of Qeshm in Hormozgan province. Reports said a man, a woman and their two-year-old son were killed in the attack, and two other children in the family were wounded.<\/p>\n
Max du Plessis, an expert member of the commission, said the repeated airstrikes causing civilian casualties raise serious questions about states’ compliance with their obligations under international law. He said this is especially important when it comes to taking precautions to prevent civilians from being killed.<\/p>\n
The fact-finding mission said all parties to the conflict must observe the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law, including distinction between military targets and civilians, proportionality and precaution. It warned that violations of these obligations could entail international responsibility, including in relation to war crimes.<\/p>\n
Viviana Krsticevic, another expert member of the commission, said attacks on civilians should lead to a thorough examination of the events, the methods used and the consequences. She added that continuing such attacks could deepen people’s suffering and intensify the political and socio-economic exclusion of vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n
The commission also stressed full and unhindered access for independent human rights monitors, journalists and investigators so that evidence needed for accountability and responsibility processes can be preserved.
