The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has said that children who eat eggs are three times less likely to suffer from acute malnutrition, a finding that underscores the importance of families’ access to nutritious food amid widening food insecurity in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
In a post on its X account on Tuesday, Sept. 24, the agency said raising chickens at home can improve families’ access to nutritious food. According to FAO, this is an accessible solution for families that cannot afford a varied diet.<\/p>\n
Based on FAO estimates, about 3.7 million children under the age of five in Afghanistan are facing acute malnutrition. The agency said some families are unable to provide a varied diet for their children because of economic constraints.<\/p>\n
FAO added that home poultry farming can help many Afghan women, especially those with limited opportunities to work outside the home, both provide food for their families and generate income.<\/p>\n
According to the agency, FAO-supported home poultry activities include the distribution of chickens, feed and essential equipment, along with training in poultry management, hygiene and disease prevention. FAO said the aim of the programme is to strengthen food production, support family livelihoods and raise awareness about keeping healthy chickens.<\/p>\n
