The human rights organisation Rawadari has launched a campaign called “Accountability, not normalisation,” urging Germany, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands to reactivate their commitment to hold the Taliban authorities accountable for violations of Afghan women\u2019s and girls\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n
In a post on social media platform X on Monday, the group said that two years after the four countries pledged to pursue legal action against the Taliban administration, the focus has shifted to normalising ties with the authorities instead of taking practical steps. Rawadari said this situation was unacceptable in the face of what it called “the worst women\u2019s crisis in the world.”<\/p>\n
Rawadari called on the four countries to resume the necessary steps and provide greater transparency about the legal process for pursuing violations of women\u2019s rights under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.<\/p>\n
In Mehr 1403, Germany, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands had warned that they would take the Taliban authorities to the International Court of Justice in The Hague over widespread human rights violations, particularly breaches of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The United Nations and more than 20 countries also supported the move.<\/p>\n
The four countries had previously stressed that violations of the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan must stop. They said that if the situation did not change within a reasonable period, the legal arbitration process would first begin and, in the final stage, the case could be referred to the International Court of Justice.<\/p>\n
The campaign comes amid repeated warnings from human rights groups about expanding restrictions on Afghan women. Since returning to power in Asad 1400, the Taliban authorities have imposed sweeping restrictions on women\u2019s and girls\u2019 education, work, public presence and personal freedoms.<\/p>\n
Human rights activists warn that any normalisation of relations with the Taliban authorities, without considering the situation of women and girls, could undermine efforts to secure justice and accountability for human rights violations.
