Gurjit Singh Aujla, the Amritsar member of India’s parliament from the Congress party, has called on the sidelines of the BRICS summit for the reopening of an old trade route from India through Pakistan and Afghanistan to Europe, a route he said could expand economic cooperation and investment in the region.<\/p>\n
He said this historic corridor, which he believes dates back hundreds or even thousands of years, is important for the economic and cultural progress of the countries in the region and BRICS members. According to Aujla, Punjab, as a border state, also wants to attract investment through the activation of this route.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan has long held an important position as a link between trade routes connecting Central Asia, South Asia and West Asia.
