The 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency opened in Vienna on Monday, with Iran’s nuclear programme described as one of the key issues on the agenda. The meeting is being held with representatives from 181 member states and runs until Sept. 18.<\/p>\n
According to the IAEA website, representatives of member countries are discussing issues related to nuclear energy, nuclear safety and security, as well as the agency’s programmes and budget. The conference is regarded as the agency’s most important policy-making body.<\/p>\n
In his opening remarks, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Timor-Leste had been admitted as the 182nd member of the organisation. He also claimed that the agency’s monitoring situation over Iran’s nuclear programme had become “worse” in 2026.<\/p>\n
Grossi said the agency withdrew its inspectors from Iran after renewed attacks at the end of February. According to him, aside from one inspection of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in June, the IAEA has carried out no other field verification activities in Iran over the past more than six months.<\/p>\n
The IAEA chief also claimed the agency has for more than a year lost continuity of knowledge about declared stocks of low-enriched uranium and uranium enriched to 60% U-235 at some Iranian nuclear facilities. He said the lack of access to verify these materials is a serious proliferation concern.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, did not attend the meeting because of travel restrictions. According to the report, the matter has drawn reactions from Iran and Russia.<\/p>\n
