The continued deprivation of millions of girls from secondary and higher education remains one of the main obstacles to the Taliban administration\u2019s engagement with the world. However, Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting foreign minister of the Taliban administration, has said that “all countries” have asked the administration to allow Afghan girls to go to school.<\/p>\n
In an interview with BBC senior correspondent Lyse Doucet, Muttaqi also claimed that Afghanistan should be seen from an “internal perspective” and that “not everything has been banned for women.” His remarks come as the ban on girls’ education beyond primary school remains in place, with no clear timeline announced for its removal.<\/p>\n
According to the Taliban administration\u2019s acting foreign minister, about three million girls are studying in primary schools and religious schools, and tens of thousands of women are also working in the health sector, education and small businesses. Citing these figures, he stressed that the international community should take into account the “realities of Afghanistan.”<\/p>\n
In contrast, reports from the UN Human Rights Council and the UN special rapporteur show that restrictions on girls’ education remain widespread, and a large number of women have been denied access to secondary and higher education. Based on these assessments, more than 2.5 million girls have been unable to continue their studies in secondary schools and universities.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan is currently the only country in the world that has stopped girls’ education after primary school. The Taliban administration calls this situation “temporary,” but has so far provided no specific timetable for reopening girls’ schools.<\/p>\n
Girls’ education has been a constant focus of talks over the past three years between the Taliban administration and countries in the region and the West.
