The Taliban administration says work is underway on more than 20 solar power projects in 11 provinces of Afghanistan, projects it says have a combined capacity of 834 megawatts and are intended to reduce the country’s dependence on imported electricity.<\/p>\n
Mohammad Sadiq Haqparast, spokesman for the Afghanistan Electric Power Company, said the projects are being implemented at a cost of nearly 8 billion afghanis in the provinces of Kabul, Parwan, Logar, Khost, Herat, Laghman, Ghazni, Baghlan, Balkh and Nangarhar, and that completion will take two to three years.<\/p>\n
According to him, the projects include 40-megawatt schemes in Logar, Balkh and Nangarhar, a 70-megawatt project in Kabul and a 100-megawatt project in Parwan. Haqparast added that the initial work on these projects will take six to seven months, and once practical work begins, completion of each project may take up to one year.<\/p>\n
Economic experts also say Afghanistan has great potential for solar power generation, but tapping into this capacity depends on attracting investment, building electricity transmission networks and ensuring that the relevant authorities guarantee the purchase of the electricity produced.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan currently imports much of the electricity it needs from neighbouring countries, and the expansion of solar energy is seen as one option that could reduce part of this dependence. The Afghanistan Electric Power Company is the body responsible for distributing and managing electricity in the country, and reducing reliance on imported power has remained one of the sector’s main challenges in recent years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
