Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the opening of the BRICS leaders\u2019 summit in New Delhi, called for reform of the United Nations Security Council and equal participation by Global South countries in drafting international rules. He said countries on the front lines of global crises should not be excluded from international decision-making.<\/p>\n
In his opening address to the two-day BRICS summit on Saturday, Modi said global governance reform must rest on three pillars: representation, accountability and rule-making. He stressed that reform of the UN Security Council must no longer be delayed.<\/p>\n
The Indian prime minister also said that, despite being directly affected by global crises, Global South countries do not have equal standing in international decision-making structures. He said this situation must change and the way should be opened for broader participation in global cooperation.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in his remarks, Modi said BRICS members act on the basis of consensus while respecting each other\u2019s views. He added that the group is not defined in opposition to any country and seeks to build broader cooperation with others.<\/p>\n
On the economic front, he said voting power, management posts and policy priorities in international financial institutions must be aligned with today\u2019s economic realities. Countries that play a larger role in driving the global economy, he said, should also have a stronger role in guiding global economic governance.<\/p>\n
The BRICS summit in New Delhi is being held with the participation of the presidents of China, Russia and Iran, along with other leaders of the group. BRICS is an alliance of emerging economies that in recent years has taken on a more prominent role in global affairs, as it has expanded its membership and pressed more strongly for changes to international structures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
