Amnesty International has called on the Pakistani government to urgently investigate the disappearance of Afghan journalist Syed Qasim Hashemi and Afghan artist Hamid Ehsas in Islamabad, and to be accountable to their families.<\/p>\n
In a statement released today, Friday, 20 Sonbola, the organisation said Pakistani authorities must clarify the fate and whereabouts of the two Afghan citizens. Amnesty International warned that failure to pursue the case is raising concerns about the possibility of their \u201cenforced disappearance\u201d or \u201carbitrary detention.\u201d<\/p>\n
Syed Qasim Hashemi and Hamid Ehsas went missing more than two months ago, on July 4, from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The two had left Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country, fearing the group.<\/p>\n
According to published information, the families of the two men have had no contact with them since their disappearance. Pakistani police authorities have also refused to register a case in connection with their abduction.<\/p>\n
The brother of Syed Qasim Hashemi and the wife of Hamid Ehsas previously told Etilaat Roz newspaper that the families\u2019 efforts to find the two men had not produced any results. According to the families, Hashemi and Ehsas had travelled to Pakistan with their families, but did not have valid residence documents for the country.<\/p>\n
The families of the two Afghan citizens also said that the vehicle used by Hashemi and Ehsas was identified through GPS in Islamabad\u2019s D-12 area after their disappearance, but no trace of them was found around the car.<\/p>\n
