The UN Security Council held a meeting focused on Iran on Thursday, at which Russia and China opposed the reimposition of United Nations sanctions on Iran, saying the move had no legal basis.<\/p>\n
The Russian representative at the meeting said Moscow opposed any resolution against Iran and supported China\u2019s position on the snapback mechanism. He added that, in Russia\u2019s view, the snapback mechanism had expired and the JCPOA had also reached its “sunset” stage.<\/p>\n
The Chinese representative also said the Security Council had concluded its review of Iran\u2019s nuclear file last year and, according to him, the council\u2019s current president does not have the authority to prepare a 90-day report or hold a new meeting on the matter. He described attempts by some members to forcibly restore UN sanctions as “divisive” and “illegal.”<\/p>\n
On the other side, the US representative rejected the remarks by China and Russia and backed Britain\u2019s position. He claimed that the Security Council had decided last year to restore sanctions resolutions against Iran and that the implementation of those sanctions should resume.<\/p>\n
The US representative also claimed that Iran had blocked access to nuclear sites. He accused Russia and China of supporting Iran by ignoring resolutions and using their veto power.<\/p>\n
Britain\u2019s representative also said at the meeting that Iran\u2019s nuclear issue has been one of the major international security dossiers since 2006. He claimed that Iran continued its nuclear activities after the JCPOA agreement and moved away from its commitments.<\/p>\n
The JCPOA, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was an agreement reached between Iran and several world powers over restrictions on the country\u2019s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, and it has since remained a recurring topic of discussion in the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
