United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that more than 8,500 attacks over the past two years have targeted schools, students and teachers around the world, posing a serious threat to safe access to education.<\/p>\n
Speaking on September 9, the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, he said the right to education was increasingly becoming a right under threat, as schools and other educational places face deadly violence, abductions and psychological harm.<\/p>\n
Guterres stressed that education is both a path to a better future for every child and young person, and a fundamental human right. He called on all countries to guarantee children\u2019s right to education and protect schools and educational institutions.<\/p>\n
The UN chief also urged parties to conflicts to stop attacking educational facilities, prevent such attacks, comply with international law and hold those responsible to account.<\/p>\n
He called on countries to invest in education, adopt and implement the Safe Schools Declaration, and support the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack.<\/p>\n
Guterres said protecting education systems is not limited to physical spaces and that online education security must also be ensured, especially for girls and children in vulnerable situations. He also stressed the safe reintegration into schools and communities of children associated with armed forces and groups.<\/p>\n
According to him, the United Nations is working with countries to strengthen protection for education through practical tools and support, including UNESCO implementation guidance and policy assistance.<\/p>\n
The International Day to Protect Education from Attack is observed every year to draw attention to threats to education during war and violence. The Safe Schools Declaration is also an international framework aimed at reducing the military use of educational facilities and better protecting students and teachers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
