Abdul Qahar Balkhi, spokesman for the Taliban-run Foreign Ministry, told CBS that the equipment now belongs to Afghanistan.

Balkhi made the remarks in response to a request from US President Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly criticised the manner of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan under Joe Biden and called for the return of billions of dollars worth of military equipment left in the country.

According to the Taliban Foreign Ministry spokesman, the administration does not trade in what he described as “state assets.” In response to the argument that the equipment was paid for with US taxpayers’ money, he said Americans “killed many people” in Afghanistan and destroyed much of the country.

CBS reported from Kabul that five years after the withdrawal of US forces, Taliban fighters are still using armoured vehicles, weapons and military equipment that had previously been provided to the security forces of Afghanistan’s former government. The report added that some of this equipment has also been displayed at military ceremonies in recent years.

According to figures released by the Pentagon, after the collapse of the former government’s security forces in 1400, weapons and military equipment worth $7 billion fell into Taliban hands.
