Thousands of Afghan citizens who were transferred to third countries after the 2021 emergency evacuation from Afghanistan remain in immigration limbo, and some say the review of their cases has been halted. In some cases, this situation has also led to the loss of livelihood assistance and made a safe return to Afghanistan impossible.<\/p>\n
According to Radio Azadi, these individuals, who had previously worked with US institutions and forces, were moved to places such as Abu Dhabi Camp in the United Arab Emirates and Al-Sailiya Camp in Qatar to complete administrative and security procedures. However, changes in Washington\u2019s immigration policy and the suspension of admission programs have left their fate uncertain.<\/p>\n
One applicant in a P-1 case said that after years of waiting at Abu Dhabi Camp, he was transferred to Rwanda with the promise of a three-month relocation to countries such as Canada, Australia or Germany. According to him, more than a year after the transfer, there has been no progress in his case, and their financial support and living expenses have also been completely cut off over the past two months.<\/p>\n
The refugee also said he has been separated from his family for five years, and his family members are now in Al-Sailiya Camp in Qatar. He stressed that the suspension of responses from US institutions and the lack of a safe return option to Afghanistan have left them in a very difficult situation.<\/p>\n
Migrant rights activists and camp residents say around 1,100 Afghan refugees are still waiting in Al-Sailiya Camp in Qatar for a decision on their cases. According to them, changes in US domestic policy and the suspension of visas should not harm those who worked with US institutions for years.<\/p>\n
These refugees have called for alternative pathways to be activated for resettlement in refugee-receiving countries, including Canada, Australia and several European countries. At the same time, experts and migrant rights activists have said that removing the cases from political deadlock and meeting these people’s basic living needs are urgent steps to contain the crisis.<\/p>\n
IRAP, or the International Refugee Assistance Project, is one of the organisations involved in the legal follow-up of migration and asylum cases.
