US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has made a controversial remark comparing Canada to a \u201csmall, noisy dog,\u201d comments that came amid trade disputes between Washington and Ottawa.<\/p>\n
According to Fox News, Bessent, when asked about trade relations between the United States and Canada and the possibility of reciprocal tariffs from Ottawa, said Canada reminded him of a small dog that kept provoking a larger dog.<\/p>\n
Explaining the analogy, he said he once had a German Shepherd, and a little dog would constantly provoke it on the playground. In his view, Canada was like that small dog that kept barking.<\/p>\n
Bessent added that the larger dog did not react to the behaviour for a long time, but eventually lost its patience.<\/p>\n
The US Treasury Secretary also criticised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for rejecting Donald Trump\u2019s trade proposal. He said Canada had been offered the chance of a major trade deal, but Ottawa turned it down and, in his view, the decision was probably driven by political motives.<\/p>\n
Bessent also claimed the move would not cause significant harm to the US economy. Asked about the impact of Canadian tariffs on prices in the United States, he said he was willing to debate the issue based on statistics and data.<\/p>\n
The United States and Canada are among each other\u2019s closest trading partners, and any verbal or tariff-related tensions between the two countries can cast a shadow over bilateral economic ties.
