Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences destroyed 258 Ukrainian drones overnight over 15 Russian regions, as well as over the waters of the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.<\/p>\n
According to RIA Novosti, the ministry said the drones were intercepted and shot down before reaching their targets. The report did not give further details on possible casualties or damage caused by the attacks.<\/p>\n
The report comes as drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine have intensified in recent days. Western sources have also reported an increase in Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory and, in response, large-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure.<\/p>\n
At the same time as the fighting escalated, special envoys of US President Donald Trump travelled to Russia and, after meeting officials there, headed to Ukraine. According to Russian officials, the two envoys began their trip to Kyiv after more than three hours of talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.<\/p>\n
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, described the talks as constructive and frank. He also said Putin had stressed the need to address what he called the root causes of the Ukraine conflict.<\/p>\n
The Sea of Azov lies in southeastern Ukraine and southwestern Russia and is considered one of the key strategic routes in the war between the two countries.
