Guyana has said it has accepted the first group of asylum seekers deported from the United States under the controversial third-country deportation scheme.<\/p>\n
According to Guyana\u2019s foreign ministry, the group consists of six people who arrived in the country on Friday, Sept. 4, after the necessary checks were completed.<\/p>\n
The foreign ministry said the individuals have no criminal records and were deported from the United States because of \u201cimmigration issues.\u201d It added that the agreement with Washington was reached after months of talks, but does not mean these people will be granted permanent residence in Guyana.<\/p>\n
A foreign ministry official said the asylum seekers will remain in the country while they await a decision on their immigration status. He said they may eventually be sent back to their country of origin or transferred elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Guyanese officials also said the International Organization for Migration is responsible for implementing the programme, and that the costs of accommodation and support for these individuals will also be covered by the agency. So far, officials in Guyana and the United States have not released details about the identity of the asylum seekers.<\/p>\n
A week earlier, the United States also deported dozens of asylum seekers, including 12 Afghan nationals, to Central Africa. At the same time, several European countries are also advancing plans to transfer asylum seekers to third countries, and five European countries had previously said they wanted to finalise the programme by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
Guyana is located in South America and is one of the founding members of the 15-member Caribbean Community. The country has recently joined a number of other members of the bloc in accepting small groups of deportees from the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
