On the occasion of September 5, World Charity Day, some needy families in Afghanistan say that despite severe economic hardships, they have still not benefited from charity aid, highlighting concerns over how assistance reaches those who are eligible.<\/p>\n
This comes as charitable foundations in Afghanistan provide food supplies, cash assistance and support to low-income families, meeting some immediate needs. Even so, according to some needy people, this aid does not reach all deserving individuals equally.<\/p>\n
Zalmai, one of those in need, said: “They also took our names and said they would help us, but it has been two years and they have not helped us yet.” Del Agha, another needy man, said: “Aid should reach the poor and the destitute. It should not be given to people who are not deserving.”<\/p>\n
Officials from some charitable foundations say the scale of needs and the shortage of resources have made it difficult to respond to all needy families. Ahmad Shahram Vafaei, an official with one charitable foundation, said: “By identifying people’s problems and addressing them in a timely manner, charitable foundations can stand alongside the government as an arm to help meet these needs in various fields.”<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, some experts are stressing a change in the way aid is delivered. Sayed Masoud, an economic expert, said: “If humanitarian and food aid moves away from being purely consumptive and toward investment, it can be more effective.”<\/p>\n
The Taliban administration has also spoken about the activity of these institutions and monitoring them. According to figures from the Taliban administration’s Ministry of Justice, nearly 300 charitable foundations are registered with the ministry and are active across the country. Barakatullah Rasouli, spokesman for the Taliban administration’s Ministry of Justice, said the ministry regularly monitors the activities of charitable foundations to prevent illegal activities.<\/p>\n
Abdul Rahman Habib, spokesman for the Taliban administration’s Ministry of Economy, also said charitable institutions and non-governmental NGOs provide a significant share of humanitarian and social services in livelihoods, health, education, disaster response and support for needy families.<\/p>\n
World Charity Day is observed every year on September 5 and aims to draw attention to the role of aid organizations in supporting vulnerable groups.
