Several Western media outlets have reported that U.S. President Donald Trump, together with his senior advisers, is seeking to contain tensions with Iran and explore ways to declare an end to the war.<\/p>\n
The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, wrote that Trump discussed the possibility of ending the war with Iran in private meetings with senior aides and appeared supportive of the idea.<\/p>\n
Reuters also reported, citing four informed sources, that four of Trump\u2019s senior advisers are trying to prevent the conflict from expanding before the congressional midterm elections in November in order to reduce its political cost for the Republican Party. According to the report, White House officials are worried that the continuation of the war will cast a shadow over the election atmosphere and weaken Republicans\u2019 fragile position in the Senate and the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
Reuters wrote that the possibility has also been raised that military action could intensify again after the elections. The news agency added that the U.S. government is currently prioritising economic pressure on Tehran to gain the upper hand in any future talks, a move that has become more prominent after the failure of recent military operations in recent months.<\/p>\n
Reuters also reported that declining public support for the war is another factor behind this change in approach. According to the agency\u2019s poll in late August, 31% of Americans supported war with Iran and about 63% opposed it, with the report linking that opposition to rising gasoline prices in the United States.<\/p>\n
Sources cited by Reuters said a tactical pause in the war could give the U.S. military time to replenish its shortage of precision-guided munitions. However, according to those sources, implementing a policy of waiting and seeing is difficult in practice because both sides continue to exchange attacks.<\/p>\n
Previously, The Washington Post also reported that commanders of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force warned Pete Hegseth, the country’s war secretary, that a prolonged war could reduce U.S. forces’ readiness on other fronts.
