China’s Foreign Ministry has said Beijing’s interests in the country must be preserved and guaranteed in response to the oil deal between the United States and Venezuela. The position comes as a possible rerouting of Venezuelan oil exports could affect China’s economic ties with Caracas.<\/p>\n
Guo Jiakun, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, said Beijing wants its interests in Venezuela not to be harmed by the agreement. He stressed that relations between countries should be based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.<\/p>\n
According to him, economic cooperation between governments should also be founded on the principles of equality, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. China did not provide further details on how it would protect its interests in Venezuela.<\/p>\n
China has been one of Venezuela’s main oil partners over the past two decades, and a significant portion of Caracas’s debt to Beijing was repaid through oil deliveries. Estimates put Venezuela’s oil debt to China at around $10 billion to $15 billion.<\/p>\n
The report says that following the political developments of January 2026 and US intervention, Venezuela’s oil exports to China have declined sharply. It also said Washington is now trying to direct Venezuelan oil exports toward the United States and Western companies.<\/p>\n
Venezuela is among the world’s largest holders of oil reserves and has therefore always played an important role in the geopolitical and economic rivalries of major powers.
