Muhammad Mohaqiq, leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan, has warned that continued pressure on Hazaras and Shiites, as well as the exclusion of opponents from political participation, raises the risk of rising tensions and the spread of conflict in Afghanistan. He said incidents such as forced displacement and an attack on a Hazara school have pushed discontent to a point that could trigger broader reactions.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Saturday, the seventh of Sunbula, on Afghanistan International\u2019s programme Viewpoint, Mohaqiq described Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting interior minister in the Taliban administration, as having called for the return of political opponents to Afghanistan, as \u201cunreasonable.\u201d According to him, returning to a country where opponents do not have political rights or freedom of movement is not acceptable.<\/p>\n
He said the Taliban administration does not recognise the existence and status of Hazaras and Shiites, and therefore has not allocated them a share in the power structure. Mohaqiq added that the current situation has become difficult not only for Hazaras, but for all ethnic groups and currents opposed to the Taliban administration.<\/p>\n
The leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan urged the public to intensify political struggles against the Taliban administration and raise their voices of protest louder. He also warned that if no path remains to resolve the crisis, they too may enter the field alongside others and fight.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Mohaqiq described Sirajuddin Haqqani and his team as a \u201cpowerful\u201d current and said they can be \u201ccounted on.\u201d He added that if Haqqani\u2019s promises to restore the rights of Hazaras and Shiites are implemented, part of the people of Afghanistan may join him; although, he said, it is still unclear how far hardline groups and influential circles within the Taliban administration will listen to these views.<\/p>\n
Sirajuddin Haqqani said during a visit to Bamiyan in late Asad that the legitimate demands of Hazaras must be met and that Afghanistan belongs to all its people. However, Muhammad Mohaqiq\u2019s remarks show that alongside these statements, criticism remains focused on the political exclusion of Hazaras and Shiites and the continued pressure on them.<\/p>\n
Mohaqiq also stressed the need to end tyranny and begin a \u201cclear and genuine\u201d dialogue to form an inclusive government. He said that although \u201creasonable\u201d voices are sometimes heard from within the Taliban administration, in his view the nature of this administration remains far from open to negotiation.<\/p>\n
The Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan is one of the well-known political movements among Hazaras, and Muhammad Mohaqiq is considered one of its prominent figures.
