The United States has deported dozens of people, including 12 Afghans, to the Central African Republic, according to a lawyer for a young Afghan man and several human rights groups. The transfer included a young Afghan who had previously been protected by a US court from being sent back to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
Alma David, the lawyer for the man, who is said to be in his early 20s, said her client was among those deported despite that legal protection. AfghanEvac, the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights First also confirmed his presence on the flight.<\/p>\n
According to the reports, members of the young man’s family had worked with US forces. One of his brothers, who now lives in the United States, served alongside American troops in Afghanistan’s former National Army, while another brother was a pilot trained by the United States.<\/p>\n
The New York Times, which identified the man as Khalil, reported that his father and sister had also worked with US forces. According to the paper, the deportation flight arrived in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Savaav Aria of Human Rights First said the flight carried 12 Afghans and eight Iranians, along with several nationals of Nepal and Nicaragua. The group said this was the third deportation operation from the United States to the Central African Republic this year.<\/p>\n
The deportations have been described as part of Donald Trump’s administration’s hardline immigration policy, which includes moving migrants to countries with which they have little or no connection, under agreements with third countries.
