The US Congress has extended the mandate of the Afghanistan War Commission for another year, a move that has pushed back the deadline for the final report of the independent, bipartisan body from its previous schedule to August 2027.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the commission said that the bipartisan leaders of relevant committees in the US House of Representatives and Senate had approved the extension under the law that created the commission.<\/p>\n
According to the body, the extension will allow more time to advance its investigations, complete key reviews, and present evidence-based findings and recommendations. The commission added that in the coming months it will continue working with Congress and the US executive branch to finalise its comprehensive review of the Afghanistan war.<\/p>\n
The Afghanistan War Commission was established by the US Congress in December 2021 and is tasked with carrying out a comprehensive assessment of decisions and events related to the United States’ two-decade war in Afghanistan. The review also includes major decisions made before the war began in 2001, the factors influencing US policy, and the country’s military operations during the conflict.<\/p>\n
The commission is expected to use its findings to draw lessons for US foreign and military policy and to make recommendations aimed at preventing similar mistakes from being repeated.
