Pakistan says any progress on a bilateral mechanism with the Taliban authorities will depend on their taking \u201cconcrete and verifiable\u201d action against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Baloch Liberation Army, a condition raised amid rising security tensions between the two sides.<\/p>\n
Tahir Andrabi, spokesman for Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Ministry, said in response to a proposal attributed to Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban authorities\u2019 acting interior minister, that Islamabad has considered setting up a specific bilateral mechanism to address disputes and remains ready for government-to-government talks.<\/p>\n
He stressed that the survival of such a mechanism would depend on the Taliban authorities\u2019 actions, not verbal assurances. According to him, Kabul must ensure that Afghan soil is not used for attacks against Pakistan.<\/p>\n
The Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman also urged the Taliban authorities to fulfil Afghanistan\u2019s international commitments, including those linked to the Doha Agreement. He said the mechanism could only move forward if it led to effective coordination in counterterrorism and border management.<\/p>\n
The remarks came after a journalist, in a report of talks with Sirajuddin Haqqani, said the Taliban interior minister had proposed creating committees from both sides for coordination and information sharing. According to the journalist, Haqqani also claimed that if Pakistan provided evidence, the Taliban authorities would be ready to act, and that he preferred resolving disputes directly rather than through mediation by other countries.<\/p>\n
Relations between Pakistan and the Taliban authorities have sharply deteriorated over disputes about armed groups operating on both sides of the border. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban authorities of allowing the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan to use Afghan soil to plan and carry out attacks, but the Taliban authorities deny the allegation.<\/p>\n
The tensions have in recent months led to Pakistani air strikes inside Afghanistan and military responses by the Taliban authorities, and at times have triggered intense border clashes.
