Afghanistan’s first gold and jewellery industry exhibition has opened in Kabul, an event organisers say was held to showcase the sector’s potential, support domestic production and market gold products.<\/p>\n
The Taliban-run Ministry of Industry and Commerce said the purpose of the exhibition is to introduce the capabilities of the gold industry, support domestic production and provide opportunities to market the sector’s products.<\/p>\n
Nuruddin Azizi, acting minister of industry and commerce in the Taliban administration, said at the opening ceremony that about 100,000 people are working in Afghanistan’s gold and jewellery sector. He described gold as important for Afghan families and the country’s economy, and stressed the expansion of economic activity and a move towards self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n
Azizi also called for the creation of a special brand for Afghanistan in global gold markets, saying that establishing such a brand is the right of those active in the industry.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Alireza Bikdeli, Iran’s ambassador to Kabul, referring to the art of jewellery-making in Afghanistan, described those working in the sector as artists and said Iranian goldsmiths will attend the next Afghanistan gold industry exhibition.<\/p>\n
The gold and jewellery industry is considered one of Afghanistan’s traditional economic sectors and, in addition to meeting part of domestic market demand, has the capacity to enter export markets. The holding of a specialised exhibition in this field in Kabul comes as a number of economic actors have repeatedly stressed the need for greater access to markets and stronger sales opportunities for domestic products.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
