Venezuela’s interim government said the death toll from two powerful earthquakes in the country has risen to 6,509, two months after the disaster. The latest figures show the number of dead has increased compared with the previous report, and search operations are still continuing in some areas.<\/p>\n
According to Agence France-Presse, the two quakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck the coastal state of La Guaira on June 24. At least 190 buildings in the state collapsed as a result, and parts of the area were extensively damaged.<\/p>\n
Officials said efforts to recover bodies from under the rubble in La Guaira have still not stopped. They said thousands of residents were displaced by the earthquakes and are now living in temporary camps.<\/p>\n
Venezuela’s interim government has not yet released figures for the missing in the disaster. Officials also said 335 homes have been provided for earthquake victims and pledged to make another 4,000 homes available to those affected by the end of the year.<\/p>\n
