The court accused him of involvement in stoking civil and sectarian war, as well as committing crimes against humanity and war crimes.

According to SANA, Hassoun’s trial session was held in Damascus and ended with the life sentence. The ruling is part of ongoing judicial proceedings against figures linked to Syria’s former regime.

A few days earlier, a Syrian criminal court had also sentenced Wassem Assad, the cousin of former President Bashar Assad, to death on charges of forming armed groups and carrying out mass killings. Before that, the Damascus criminal court had also sentenced Bashar Assad to death on charges of premeditated murder, and Maher Assad and Atef Najib to death on similar charges, including the torture of prisoners.

At the same time, the Damascus criminal court also issued an international arrest warrant for Bashar Assad and Maher Assad. These cases came after developments in which Syrian armed opposition groups announced on 18 Qows 1403 that they had taken control of Damascus and that Bashar Assad had left the country.

According to reports, Bashar Assad travelled to Moscow after leaving Syria.
