The claim comes as local sources say a number of Panjshir residents are being held in the Taliban administration’s intelligence and army detention centres, with the exact number unclear.

The Taliban governor’s office in Panjshir said Abdul Salam Hanafi, the administration’s deputy prime minister for administrative affairs, had travelled to the province to review the prison situation, the handling of cases and the problems faced by prisoners. During the visit, Mohammad Agha Hakim, the Taliban governor in Panjshir, said there were no political prisoners in the province.

According to Hakim, all 59 prisoners in Panjshir have been detained in connection with criminal and legal cases. Hanafi also promised to address the prisoners’ problems and suggestions.

The Taliban administration’s denial of the existence of political prisoners comes as, over the past five years, a large number of Panjshir residents, including former government soldiers, have been arrested on various charges. At the same time, the Taliban administration has also begun construction of new facilities for Panjshir prison due to a shortage of space for detainees, a move that will increase prison capacity in the province.

Panjshir, in northeastern Afghanistan, is among the provinces that have been under heavy security pressure since the Taliban administration returned to power. In recent years, the administration has set up numerous checkpoints, outposts and security posts in different parts of the province.

Taliban denies holding political prisoners in Panjshir, saying 59 inmates are in custody as it expands prison facilities.

[17,4

post-20238","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-politics
["GET
