Abdel Bari Atwan, a regional strategic affairs analyst, has said that the United States\u2019 economic blockade against Iran, like the military option, will not achieve its goal. He wrote that Donald Trump, the U.S. president, turning to sanctions and economic pressure shows that Washington\u2019s military option over the past six months has failed to meet its objectives.<\/p>\n
According to Mehr News Agency, Atwan stressed in an article that regardless of the scope of the sanctions, the shift in U.S. policy toward an economic blockade reflects the failure of the military strategy against Iran. He claimed that this policy too will face defeat because of Iran\u2019s domestic capabilities and the opposition of some countries to it.<\/p>\n
The Arab analyst said Iran, with an area of nearly two million square kilometres, fertile lands and a population of more than 95 million, is not a country that can be easily brought to its knees through an economic blockade. In his view, just as the U.S. military option failed despite the power of the American armed forces, economic pressure will also not succeed.<\/p>\n
Atwan also referred to the opposition of China, Russia and most Gulf states to the policy of blockading Iran. He wrote that the Makkah tripartite alliance was formed in a hurried atmosphere and out of the Gulf Arab states\u2019 disappointment with U.S. military support against Iranian missiles and drones.<\/p>\n
In another part of the article, he warned that if Washington has not ruled out a return to the military option, Iran is also preparing for it. Atwan cited statements by Iranian military commanders in support of this assessment, saying they have emphasized strengthening the defence industries, increasing military readiness and warning the United States against any miscalculation.<\/p>\n
