The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has described Israel\u2019s so-called E1 plan to build 1,234 new settlement units in occupied Jerusalem as illegal, warning that its implementation could lead to the forced displacement of Palestinians and undermine the territorial contiguity of Palestine.<\/p>\n
In a statement, OIC Secretary-General Hussein Ibrahim Taha said the move was a continuation of settlement, annexation and the imposition of new realities in the occupied Palestinian territories. According to him, the aim of this process is to alter the legal, political and demographic status of these areas.<\/p>\n
He warned that the E1 plan would expose Palestinian Bedouin communities to forced displacement and cut occupied Jerusalem off from its Palestinian surroundings. The OIC secretary-general added that the project would also weaken the territorial unity of Palestine and international efforts to achieve a two-state solution.<\/p>\n
Taha stressed that Israeli settlement activity in Palestinian territories is illegal and lacks legitimacy under international law and relevant UN resolutions, including Security Council Resolution 2334 and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.<\/p>\n
He called on the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to assume its legal and moral responsibilities and act to compel Israel to respect its international obligations and immediately halt systematic violations against the Palestinian people, their land and holy sites.<\/p>\n
The E1 plan refers to an area east of occupied Jerusalem that has long been at the centre of international concerns over settlement expansion, as any development there could further challenge the geographic continuity of parts of Palestinian territory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
