Under the measure, the two will have their assets frozen and financial transactions through the US financial system will be prohibited.

Washington said the decision was based on allegations that the court is engaging in political activity and interfering in the judicial jurisdiction of states. The tension is especially linked to cases in which officials from non-member states to the Rome Statute, including the United States and Israel, have been targeted for prosecution.

The International Criminal Court had previously issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the Gaza war. Israel welcomed the US decision, and Netanyahu also thanked Washington.

Japan, meanwhile, described the move as “deeply regrettable,” a matter that has taken on added sensitivity given that Tomoko Akane is a Japanese national. The Netherlands, as the host country of the International Criminal Court, has also opposed the sanctions.

The International Criminal Court is based in The Hague, the political and judicial centre of the Netherlands, and operates under the Rome Statute. Japan is also one of the main financial and political backers of this international body.

The US sanctioned the ICC chief and a deputy prosecutor, prompting protests from Japan and opposition from the Netherlands.

[6

post-19944","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-international
["GET
