He added that independence means more than freedom from foreign domination and is only meaningful when it respects the will of the people and preserves their human dignity.

Faieq also stressed that no citizen should be deprived of their basic rights because of gender, ethnicity, language, religion or political views. He said: “The independence of a land, without the freedom of its people, is not complete independence.”

The remarks come as Afghanistan marks the 107th anniversary of its restoration of independence from Britain while also passing five years under the Taliban administration again, a period that has been accompanied by an intensifying human rights crisis and the expansion of systematic restrictions on women and girls.

Afghanistan’s restoration of independence was recognised in 1919 after the Third Anglo-Afghan War, an event remembered as one of the key turning points in the country’s modern history.

Afghan envoy Naseer Ahmad Faieq says independence is incomplete without women’s rights, freedoms and access to education and work.

[17,4,3

post-19894","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-politics","category-top-news
["GET
