The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says floods, earthquakes and landslides in Afghanistan have gone beyond isolated incidents and become a new driver of growing humanitarian needs.<\/p>\n
According to the report, natural disasters affected more than 92,000 people in the first half of 2026 alone, killed 97 people and damaged or destroyed nearly 12,000 homes.<\/p>\n
OCHA also said that from January to early August, 97 people were killed and 331 injured. During the same period, nearly 10,000 homes were damaged and more than 2,100 homes were completely destroyed.<\/p>\n
In total, about 13,000 families across 34 provinces of Afghanistan were affected by these incidents. According to OCHA, floods were the main cause of the damage and alone affected nearly 88,000 people.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, eastern Afghanistan, especially Nuristan province, suffered the greatest damage. OCHA added that between July 20 and August 3 alone, nearly 5,000 more people were affected in 10 provinces.<\/p>\n
OCHA stressed that these disasters have added to existing vulnerabilities in Afghanistan, vulnerabilities that the agency says stem from decades of conflict and environmental degradation.
