The agency said border movements were up 29% compared with the first quarter of 2026.

Of the 866,579 people who entered Afghanistan, 68%, or about 586,500 people, were returnees. The International Organization for Migration said many of them cited pressure to leave, deportation, job loss and the hardships of life abroad as the main reasons for returning.

The agency added that 56% of returnees from Iran said they had been deported. It also said 66% of those who entered Afghanistan from Pakistan felt unsafe or were under pressure to leave their place of residence.

On the other hand, 65% of people who went to Iran said their aim was to seek work and livelihood opportunities. Also, 55% of those travelling to Pakistan went for health services, and 78% of those entering Afghanistan from Pakistan were accompanied by some or all members of their families.

The International Organization for Migration is a United Nations-affiliated body that tracks migration and displacement trends in different countries.
