The Coordination Council of Political and Consular Representations of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has said that five years after the Taliban administration took power, Afghanistan is still grappling with a deep political, economic and human rights crisis, and that citizens face an uncertain future in the absence of a clear outlook.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Saturday, 24 Asad, the council said poverty and unemployment remain widespread in the country, economic opportunities have narrowed, and fear and discrimination continue to cast a shadow over people\u2019s lives. According to the body, millions of Afghans currently have no clear hope for their future.<\/p>\n
The statement described the denial of secondary and higher education to girls, as well as sweeping restrictions on women\u2019s work, movement and participation in public life, as among the most serious consequences of the Taliban administration\u2019s actions. The council stressed that this situation, which it called \u201cgender apartheid,\u201d must be placed at the centre of political and diplomatic efforts and of international accountability.<\/p>\n
The Coordination Council of Political and Consular Representations of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan also called on the people to move beyond past divisions and work to shape a shared vision for the country\u2019s future. It also urged the United Nations to see Afghanistan not only as a humanitarian crisis, but as an unresolved political crisis that requires sustained international attention.<\/p>\n
