The American newspaper The New York Times has reported that Iran’s missile and drone attacks on the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain have complicated efforts to support and supply the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. According to the report, these problems began on the first day of the war and have also affected the ship’s crew.<\/p>\n
The New York Times wrote that with much of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain damaged, one of the main logistical hubs of the US Navy, on which the force had relied for years, was lost. The newspaper said the loss of this centre forced the US Navy to turn to alternative options to meet the basic needs of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.<\/p>\n
According to the report, while the possibility of Iranian attacks on other regional ports was also being considered, the Pentagon identified a British-run base on Diego Garcia island as a new supply centre. The island is located south of the Maldives and is about 2,200 miles from the area where two carrier strike groups are operating in the Gulf of Oman. The New York Times added that the base was later also targeted by missile attacks.<\/p>\n
The newspaper also reported that the loss of the Bahrain hub has added to the problems of support ships involved in operations against Iran. In response to this situation, Democratic senators have expressed concern about the condition of the 5,000 crew members of the USS Abraham Lincoln and the continuation of their deployment, which has lasted nearly nine months.<\/p>\n
Richard Blumenthal, the Democratic senator from Connecticut, wrote in a letter to US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth that the reported problems included shortages of essential supplies and worsening mental health among the crew.<\/p>\n
