Sources in Kandahar say Taliban Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice officers have detained 18 shopkeepers in the city of Kandahar, in an action that comes amid the department’s continued monitoring of men’s appearance and women’s movement.<\/p>\n
According to the sources, the shopkeepers were detained on Wednesday evening, 21 August, from Kuche Rangrezan in the Shahidan Square area. The detained men were reportedly engaged in buying and selling women’s goods.<\/p>\n
The sources said the arrests were made for failing to comply with Taliban directives. Based on this information, shaving beards and, in some cases, trading with female customers were among the reasons for the detention of the shopkeepers.<\/p>\n
One source said on Thursday, 22 August, that eight of those detained had been released, but 12 others remained in the custody of the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. According to the same source, patrols by the ministry’s officers in Kandahar city are ongoing.<\/p>\n
The sources also say Taliban morality officers monitor men’s hair and faces as well as women’s dress, and that those who do not follow the department’s orders are detained.
