The Nai organization has reported that more than 700 cases of violence against journalists and media workers have been recorded in Afghanistan over the past five years, a situation it says has been accompanied by mass arrests, the exclusion of women from the media and the suspension of hundreds of outlets.<\/p>\n
The group on Wednesday, 21 Asad, on the eve of the fifth year of Taliban rule in Afghanistan, published its report on the situation of journalists and media workers. According to the report, at least six journalists were killed during this period and about 400 journalists and media workers were arrested.<\/p>\n
Nai said the documented cases include deprivation of liberty, torture, beatings, threats, killings, unemployment and the sidelining of women from the media. The organization said the Taliban administration and ISIS were responsible for the killing of journalists during this period.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the Taliban administration has arrested, on average, two journalists or media workers every nine days. Nai also described the torture and mistreatment of journalists during detention and imprisonment as one of the most serious violations of journalists’ rights.<\/p>\n
The report says female journalists and media workers have faced widespread pressure and restrictions, and many of them have been forced out of work in the media. Nai also said the unemployment of journalists and media workers is a direct consequence of the restrictions imposed on the media.<\/p>\n
According to the organization, nearly 5,000 journalists and media workers have become unemployed over the past five years, about 300 cases of journalists being beaten have been recorded, and nearly 500 media outlets have been unable to continue operating. Nai added that now no media outlet in Afghanistan can publish or broadcast content without the Taliban administration’s permission.<\/p>\n
The organization also said there is no clear and reliable law governing media activity, and the Taliban administration has imposed more than 25 direct and nationwide directives, along with dozens of local and indirect orders, on the media and journalists. According to the report, the departments and bodies responsible for information and culture, justice and intelligence within the Taliban administration have played a direct role in enforcing this pressure.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) said in a separate report that Afghanistan has turned into a ‘global center of forced exile for journalists’ amid severe repression, structural censorship and security pressure, and that freedom of expression has fallen to its lowest level.<\/p>\n
In its conclusion, Nai described Afghanistan as a ‘large and frightening prison for journalists and a graveyard for freedom of expression.’ The group is among the media support organizations in Afghanistan that document violations of journalists’ rights and the state of freedom of expression.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
