Amid continued educational restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, Iran’s Payam Noor University has announced plans to establish an international branch at the Dogharoun border crossing, a centre university officials say is intended to attract Afghan students.<\/p>\n
Mohammad Hadi Amin Najafi, president of Payam Noor University of Iran, said during a visit to Taybad County that Afghanistan’s border location, particularly Herat’s proximity to Dogharoun, has created suitable conditions for attracting students interested in continuing their studies in Iran. He added that the necessary infrastructure for establishing the branch is being prepared and expressed hope that it will begin operating by the end of the current year.<\/p>\n
He also said that since the Taliban returned to power and imposed a ban on education for girls and women in Afghanistan, interest in continuing studies at Payam Noor University in Iran has increased. According to him, the centre could make it possible for Afghan girls and boys to continue their education.<\/p>\n
Ali Monazam Ismailpour, head of Payam Noor University in Razavi Khorasan, also described Dogharoun as one of eastern Iran’s important economic hubs and said more than 3,500 Iranian and foreign travellers cross the border daily. He added that Herat is located less than 130 kilometres from Dogharoun and that establishing this branch could help attract Afghan students.<\/p>\n
According to the university official, more than 1,400 female and male students are currently studying at Payam Noor University in Taybad. Taybad’s governor also described the launch of the centre as an opportunity for Afghans seeking to study in Iran and called for the plan to be implemented swiftly and within the framework of the law.<\/p>\n
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban administration has banned education for girls above sixth grade as well as women’s university studies, restrictions that have faced widespread criticism from various countries and international organisations. Dogharoun crossing in Razavi Khorasan, opposite the Islam Qala border in Herat, is considered one of the main routes for movement and trade between Afghanistan and Iran.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
