Taliban authorities, during a meeting with Turkmenistan’s national leader, called for finalizing an agreement on the gas prices for the TAPI project and establishing a long-term mechanism to prevent price fluctuations. This request holds vital importance for Afghanistan’s revenues and energy market amid the ongoing economic crisis in the country.<\/p>\n
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of the Taliban administration, met with Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow on Monday in Turghundi district of Herat province. The Deputy Economic Office announced that work related to the TAPI project is underway in Herat and, according to the administration, the remaining parts will be completed according to the timeline.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Baradar urged Turkmenistan to reach an agreement on determining the gas price and to consider a formula that would shield the prices from the impact of fluctuations in European markets. He also proposed signing a long-term gas contract with simple conditions and a flexible mechanism for revisions.<\/p>\n
The Taliban’s Deputy Economic Minister also requested Ashgabat’s cooperation in building the gas distribution and consumption network in Herat, establishing a joint technical and legal commission to resolve outstanding issues related to the TAPI project, and creating more job opportunities for Afghan citizens.<\/p>\n
According to him, expanding economic cooperation between the two sides can be strengthened through reopening the Aqina border for oil transit, facilitating the transfer of Afghan transit goods at Turkmenbashi port, removing obstacles to activating the Lapis Lazuli corridor, and reconstructing and developing the Herat\u2013Turghundi railway line. He further urged Turkmenistan to support major projects in Afghanistan\u2019s electricity and transport sectors.<\/p>\n
In response, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow stated that Turkmenistan is ready to cooperate on extending the TAPI pipeline to Herat and the construction of a gas distribution network in the province. He added that several foreign companies have expressed willingness to invest in the TAPI project and that Ashgabat is prepared to provide necessary facilities for Afghan commercial and transit goods at Turkmenbashi port.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, both parties agreed to establish a joint technical committee headed by senior officials to follow up and implement the TAPI, TAPI pipeline, fiber optic, and railway projects.<\/p>\n
The TAPI project is intended to transport Turkmenistan\u2019s gas through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India.
