The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has issued a warning that a severe shortage of financial resources threatens the delivery of vital services to millions in need across Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
According to OCHA, approximately $1.7 billion was requested for the implementation of the 2026 Afghanistan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan. However, only 26% of this amount has been funded so far, leaving the program with a deficit close to $1.3 billion.<\/p>\n
In a message posted on the social media platform X, the agency emphasized that as humanitarian needs increase, the reduction in financial resources has placed additional pressure on relief programs, making it difficult to continue some essential services. Despite this challenging situation, humanitarian organizations and international partners are striving to deliver aid to vulnerable communities throughout the country.<\/p>\n
Several organizations active in the health sector have also warned that budget shortfalls have limited healthcare services, particularly in reproductive health, reducing access for women and girls in remote areas to medicine, medical equipment, and awareness programs.<\/p>\n
The Asian Organization for Sustainable Development has also stated that cuts in funding have halted or scaled back programs related to livelihoods, women\u2019s empowerment, food security, education, climate change response, and community reconstruction.<\/p>\n
According to OCHA statistics, 21.9 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance this year, but aid agencies have only been able to prioritize support for 17.5 million individuals.
