A court in Munich, Germany, has sentenced an Afghan citizen to life imprisonment on charges of attacking a gathering with a car, killing a mother and her young daughter. The verdict, recognizing the “particular severity of the crime,” significantly reduces the chances of his early release.<\/p>\n
According to Agence France-Presse, on Thursday (August 6), the 25-year-old defendant, identified as “Farhad N.”, was found guilty of two counts of murder, 23 counts of attempted murder, and 22 counts of inflicting bodily harm.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred in February of last year when the accused drove a Mini Cooper into a march of approximately 1,400 members of a labor union. As a result, a 37-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter were severely injured and died days later due to serious head injuries.<\/p>\n
Court documents state that the vehicle stopped after traveling about 23 meters because the front wheels were no longer in contact with the ground due to people falling in front and under the car. One witness during the trial described people being thrown around “like bowling pins.”<\/p>\n
Prosecutors stated that the defendant carried out the attack with “religious motives” and uttered the phrase “Allahu Akbar” after running over the individuals. However, judicial authorities emphasized that he was not a member of any organized jihadist group, including the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).<\/p>\n
Defense lawyers requested his transfer to a psychiatric facility, but court-appointed experts declared that any potential mental health issues did not reduce his criminal responsibility.<\/p>\n
Farhad N. came to Germany unaccompanied in 2016 at age 15. His asylum application was rejected, but he received residence and work permits. Police reported that he worked in security and was interested in bodybuilding.<\/p>\n
Authorities believe that in the months leading up to the attack, he was radicalized by following the online content of certain extremist Afghan preachers.<\/p>\n
The attack took place days before Germany’s nationwide February 2025 elections, in which the far-right Alternative for Germany party received over 20 percent of the vote.
