Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, has announced that his government will support Kimberly Prost, a Canadian judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC), against US sanctions if necessary. Prost was sanctioned by Washington due to her role in examining the Afghanistan case.<\/p>\n
Carney emphasized Ottawa\u2019s “unequivocal” support for the ICC, stating that the institution is especially important amid rising global insecurity and crises, and that Canada remains committed to the principles of international law. However, he did not explain why his government has yet to officially condemn the US sanctions against the judge.<\/p>\n
Kimberly Prost is one of the judges involved in the investigation of the Afghanistan case, which includes allegations of war crimes and human rights violations committed by various parties involved in the Afghan conflict. The US sanctioned her last year due to her handling of allegations related to American military personnel, an action viewed as part of Washington\u2019s efforts to pressure the ICC.<\/p>\n
Following the sanctions, Prost petitioned a court in New York to lift restrictions, including prohibitions on financial services and credit card usage.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, France has previously criticized the sanctions against the ICC judge, calling them contrary to the independence of international judicial bodies. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also stated that Washington is trying to weaken the Court and has urged its allies to withdraw from it.<\/p>\n
The Afghanistan case is one of the ICC’s most significant dossiers over the past two decades. The court began examining Afghanistan’s situation in 2006 and has since investigated allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by various groups, including the Taliban, former Afghan security forces, and foreign troops.
