Heavy rains and rising river levels in India’s Assam state have so far claimed the lives of at least 87 people and forced thousands to flee their homes. Many families are now living in temporary shelters.<\/p>\n
The rising water has extensively damaged homes and farmland. Residents are using boats and other floating devices to salvage their remaining belongings.<\/p>\n
Ratan Ruhi Das, one of the affected residents, said, “I am six years old and have seen many floods, but I had never experienced such a massive volume of water. The water rose so quickly that we didn’t have time to gather our belongings, and the flood took everything away.”<\/p>\n
Deepa Das, another flood victim, said all the residents of their village are living in tents, and even after more than two weeks, they still cannot return to their homes because the houses remain submerged in water and mud.<\/p>\n
Assam state, through which the mighty Brahmaputra River flows, faces extensive flooding each year during the monsoon season. Experts warn that with the intensifying impact of climate change, countries such as India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan are increasingly at risk of floods, droughts, glacier melting, and water shortages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
