The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that of the $1.7 billion requested for Afghanistan’s Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan this year, only 26 percent has been funded, leaving a $1.3 billion shortfall.<\/p>\n
According to OCHA, which posted the update on X (formerly Twitter) today (Wednesday, August 5), despite a sharp reduction in financial resources, partner organizations are striving to continue providing essential services to vulnerable communities; however, the funding gap has restricted access to those in need.<\/p>\n
The humanitarian organization Yaar, which operates in the health sector, stated that the decrease in resources has seriously affected its ability to continue reproductive health services. The organization added that the funding shortage has limited access to essential medicines, equipment, and awareness programs, making it more difficult to deliver services to women and girls in remote areas.<\/p>\n
The Asian Organization for Sustainable Development (AOSD) also reported that many programs related to livelihoods, women’s empowerment, food security, education, climate resilience, and community rebuilding have been halted due to the lack of resources. The Institute for Environmental Management and Natural Resources (ENRAMO) emphasized that the funding deficit directly impacts the lives of the targeted communities.<\/p>\n
According to OCHA statistics, 21.9 million people in Afghanistan require humanitarian assistance this year, with 17.5 million prioritized for aid.
